Congestive heart Failure
What is Congestive Heart Failure?
Congestive heart failure is a condition caused by inefficient pumping of the heart.
In some people, congestive heart failure occurs because the heart muscles are weakened and cannot pump as well. In other people, the heart muscles become stiff, and the heart cannot fill with enough blood between heartbeats.
What are the Symptoms of Congestive Heart Failure
- Shortness of breath, swelling of the legs, weakness, and difficulty breathing when lying down may occur
- Wheezing may be present due to fluid backing up into the lungs, narrowing the diameter of airways
- Someone with congestive heart failure may cough severely, producing pink frothy mucus (sputum). This is often a sign of severe CHF, and prompt medical attention is indicated.
- Nausea and vomiting may occur as the bowels swell with fluid
How it can be diagnosed?
During your physical examination, your doctor will check your vital signs (such as blood pressure and temperature), determine your heart rate and rhythm and listen for abnormal heart sounds with a stethoscope. He or she also will listen to your lungs for abnormal breathing sounds that signal fluid accumulation.
