Cyst (Breast)

What is Cyst ?
Breast cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop within the breast tissue, usually in the upper half of the breast.

At the breast clinic you will probably have a triple assessment, which is a breast examination, mammogram (breast x-ray) and a fine needle aspiration (FNA), where the fluid in the cyst is drawn off with a fine needle and syringe. If the lump is difficult to find within the breast you may have an ultrasound scan.

Causes of Cyst
Most of the time, Bartholin's gland cysts are not infected. In some cases, however, they can be caused by an infection, or they may become infected. Your doctor may want to check the fluid in the cyst. Most infected cysts, called abscesses (say "ab-sess-es"), contain the normal bacteria that are found on your skin. Some infected cysts, however, are caused by sexually transmitted bacteria (germs).

Symptoms of Cysts
You may notice cysts in both your breasts (this is common) and they can become larger, tender and painful just before your period.

You can also have cysts without noticing anything different, and they are sometimes found by chance when tests are done for some other reason.

How it can be treated ?
The treatment that can also be done in the doctor's office is making a small cut in the cyst to drain the fluid.

The treatment can depend on one or more of these factors: the size of the cyst, how painful it is, if it's infected and your age. In some cases, a small cyst can just be watched over time to see if it grows. In other cases, the doctor can perform a minor procedure in the office.
