What is Fungal Infection in Foot ?
A number of different fungi can infect the skin and nails of toes. This infection may result in the condition known as athlete’s foot.

The fungi that affect the deeper layers of skin and internal organs are capable of causing serious, often fatal illness. Sporotrichosis is an infection of farmers, horticulturists, and others who come into contact with plants or mud. The disease affects the skin and lymphatic system and, in rare cases, becomes disseminated. Blastomycosis is caused by a yeastlike fungus that reproduces by budding.

Fungal nail infection, or 'onychomycosis', can be an unsightly, uncomfortable and sometimes a painful condition that may affect a person's ability to perform daily activities. It occurs when a fungus (tinea pedis) spreads under the toenail bed - through an opening such as broken, closely cut or ingrown toenails - causing damage to the nail and surrounding skin.

Symptoms of Fungal Infection in Foot
Persistent, burning itch that often starts between the toes. The skin on the feet may be damp, soft, red, cracked, or peeling; the feet may also show patches of dead skin. The feet often have a strong or unusual smell, and sometimes small blisters occur on the feet

How it can be treated ?
  • Wear clean socks. Change socks and shoes as often as necessary to keep the feet dry.
  • Use anti-fungal powders or creams. Antibiotics may be needed to treat secondary bacterial infections.
  • Wet dressings or medicated soaks are used to clean raw, wet or weeping lesions. Dry, scaly lesions may respond to topical creams or lotions
  • Keep the skin clean and dry. Wash the feet thoroughly with soap and water and dry the area completely. Blow-drying the feet is more effective than drying with a towel.
