Gallstones
What is Gallstone ?
Gallstones are stones that form in the gall (bile). Bile is a watery liquid made by the cells of the liver that is important for digesting food in the intestine, particularly fat.
Liver cells secrete the bile they make into small canals within the liver. The bile flows through the canals and into larger collecting ducts within the liver (the intrahepatic bile ducts). The bile then flows within the intrahepatic bile ducts out of the liver and into the extrahepatic bile ducts-first into the hepatic bile ducts, then into the common hepatic duct, and finally into the common bile duct.
Symptoms of Gallstone
When gallstones do cause symptoms, you might experience:
- Abdominal pain, usually high in the abdomen and more often on the right side
- Sensitivity to high fat meals — Fats trigger the gallbladder to contract and can worsen your pain
- Belching, gas, nausea or a general decrease in appetite
Diagnosis of Gallstone
Most gallstones do not show up on regular X-rays, but they are seen easily with an ultrasound. Gallstones are very common, but don't cause symptoms in most people. Even if you are found to have gallstones on an ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) scan, it may be difficult for your doctor to know if the stones are causing symptoms.
