Periodontal Disease
What is Periodontal Disease?
A bacterial infection that destroys the attachment fibers and supporting bone that hold the teeth in the mouth. Left untreated, these diseases can lead to tooth loss. The main cause of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on teeth.
Causes of Periodontal Disease
- Smokers get periodontitis 2-7 times more frequently than nonsmokers. This is because of a dulled immune response and because of less oxygen in your mouth.
- Diabetes worsens periodontal disease. If your blood sugar is poorly controlled, you have worse infection, poor healing, and a greater loss of bone and connective tissue.
- Stress increases certain hormones that make you more open to infection.
- Pregnancy and birth control pills also can increase your hormone levels.
- Steroids, antiseizure medicines, cancer medicines, and blood pressure medicines can all affect your gums. Some drugs decrease your flow of saliva, which irritates your mouth and makes it prone to getting infected.
Symptoms of Periodontal Disease
This occurs when bacterial toxins and enzymes destroy the connective tissue and bone.
- Your gums draw back, and the roots of your teeth are exposed. Your teeth may become very sensitive to temperature changes, or you can develop new cavities.
- The pocket between the tooth and gums deepens, and plaque in this area is very difficult to remove. Bacteria invade the surrounding structures.
- When your gums pull away from your teeth, you get pus between your teeth and gums, or your permanent teeth become loose in their sockets. Only your dentist can decide whether or not your teeth can be saved
