Shingles
What is Shingles ?
Also known as: Herpes Zoster
It is an infection of the skin that causes painful, fluid-filled blisters.
Shingles can occur in anyone who has had chickenpox. While it can occur at any age, it is more common in people over the age of 50.
Causes of Shingles
The varicella zoster which belongs to the herpes family causes shingles. The virus after causing chicken pox in childhood, remains dormant or quiet in the nerve cells near the spine. A weakening of certain cells of the immune system reawakens the varicella virus causing shingles.
Symptoms of Shingles
Shingles often begins with a general feeling of sickness, including chills, fever, headache, fatigue, nausea, and diarrhea. Some people feel only a tingling, painful, or itching sensation in one area of the skin, often on one side of the face, back, or upper abdomen. These are the areas most commonly affected by chickenpox.
Diagnosis of Shingles
The location and pattern of the rash is the most important sign that confirms the diagnosis. However, a sample of the fluid from the blisters, or of the blood can confirm the diagnosis further, beyond which, no other tests would be needed.
