Ulcerative Colitis (UC)
What is Ulcerative Colitis ?
Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which is a general name for diseases that cause the intestine to become inflamed. Ulcerative colitis is a form of IBD in which the inner lining of the large intestine becomes inflamed, swollen, and ulcerated. The inflammation usually begins in the lower end of the large intestine, called the sigmoid colon, which empties into the rectum. (Inflammation of the rectum only is called proctitis.)
Causes of Ulcerative Colitis
The cause of ulcerative colitis isn’t known. While stress can increase symptoms, stress is not a direct cause. Evidence supports the belief that heredity and overactive immune responses could be causes. Some researchers believe some type of viral, bacterial, or fungal organism sets off the cycle of the disease.
Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis
The symptoms of ulcerative colitis vary. Some people with the disease have a burst of symptoms every few months, whereas others have symptoms either continuously or rarely.
Typical symptoms include:
-
Cramping abdominal pain, especially in the lower abdomen
- Bloody diarrhea, often containing pus or mucus
- A feeling that you have little warning before you need to have a bowel movement
- The need to awaken from sleep to have bowel movements
Diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis
To confirm a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis, most patients will need to have either flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. Both procedures involve the use of a small movable camera and a light to view the insides of your large intestine. During either procedure, biopsy samples may be clipped from the lining of the intestine so that the samples can be examined under a microscope for signs of inflammation.
