Carnitine
Introduction
Carnitine is an amino acid, which is used to release energy from fat (fat metabolism). It is used by the body to transport the log-chain fatty acids to the mitochondria, which is known as the power house of cells. This fat burning activity of carnitine is a major source of muscular energy; therefore a deficiency in Carnitine leads to low energy levels in the body. Carnitine could largely be manufactured in the body but only if the vitamins and minerals are already present. These vitamins and minerals essential for the production of carnitine are B1, B6, C and iron. The next important sources of Carnitine are the amino acids lysine and methionine, which help in the synthesis of Carnitine. This amino acid is found abundantly in dairy and red meat. So if you are not a meat lover, its better that you go for some supplements of Carnitine.
Carnitine plays a very important role in controlling the action of heart. For instance patient with high blood pressure and diabetes, upon given carnitine, reported a decrease in irregular heart beats and abnormal heart functioning. Patients; with congestive heart disorders reported an increase in their tolerance for exercises and oxygen consumption. Carnitine dosage when given to people with chronic lung diseases helped the patients in improving their lung function and metabolism during exercises. Carnitine may also help people with beta thalessemia major. This disease requires transfusions of blood which ultimately results in the iron deficiency. Researchers have found that carnitine could stabilize red blood cells in addition to reducing the need for blood transfusion. Its fat burning quality makes it an excellent inclusion into the weight reduction program, thus helping obesity. Carnitine is a popular drug among the athletes, body builders and other sport person as it helps in the building of stamina and muscles.
It is very rare for anyone to be carnitine deficient, because the body produces its own carnitine. However carnitine deficiency may occur as a result of certain other diseases such as diabetes, cirrhosis etc. It may also occur due to oxygen deprivation as a result of hear disorders. Genetics is also regarded to be one of the causes of Carnitine deficiency. All in all it is a beneficial amino acid required for many functions and helpful in the cure of many diseases making it a truly life extension amino acid.
