Valine
Introduction
Valine is an important amino acid out of the twenty well known amino acids. It is obtained from hydrolysis of protein. A German scientist, Emil Fischer discovered Valine in 1901. It is an essential amino acid and can not be prepared by the body. Use of drugs can destroy the amino acids. It is a branched chain amino acid like isoleucine and leucine. Valine is found in high concentrations in muscle tissues. As it is an essential amino acid it must be consumed in the daily diet in appropriate amount to avoid deficiency of Valine.
Functions
It is mainly concerned with the muscle tissue growth, repair and metabolism. It helps in maintaining the balance of nitrogen in the tissues. It is beneficial to use for hepatic encephalopathy, brain damage which is caused by alcoholism and other degenerative neurological nerve disorders. Use of Valine is helpful in serious muscle injuries. It has stimulating effects. Valine is also helpful in synthesis of glucose in liver especially during anaerobic activities (activities without proper amount of oxygen intake). When body is unable to metabolize Valine and other branched chain amino acids it can result in maple syrup urine disease. Deficiency may also affect nerves to a certain extent. Use of Valine can help in recovery from the drug addiction amino acid deficiency. Use of Valine is most beneficial in case of injury or surgery. People who are alcohol addict must have Valine in order to support the brain damage if any.
High intake of Valine can result in hallucination and crawling sensation on skin. People with kidney and liver diseases should not take Valine without consulting a doctor. Usually the body builders are more interested in using Valine. It is best used with isoleucine and leucine. It can be obtained from dairy products, fish, meat, soy, grains, mushrooms and peanuts. It is so commonly found naturally that supplements are recommended rarely. There have been no possible drug interactions so far reported. However in case of overdose, stop using Valine and consult a doctor.
