Diabetes
Alternative Names
- Type 1 diabetes is known as insulin dependent Diabetes.
- Type 2 Diabetes is known as Non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM) or adult onset diabetes.
The alternative names for both are rarely used these days.
Introduction
In our day to day life we come across many people with diabetes. This disease which is so common is actually considered as chronic disorder of metabolism, as a result of which Glucose level in the blood raises causing diabetes.
When we consume food it is broken down in glucose which is the most essential fuel for the body. After digestion this glucose passes into the blood stream where it is helped by insulin (a hormone produced by pancreas) to move in to blood cells for growth and energy.
In, a person diagnosed of diabetes, the pancreases either produces little or no insulin or in the other case the body refuses to respond to insulin. As a result the glucose generated by the body could not get into the blood cells. Thus the glucose stays in the blood causing the glucose level in blood to rise and further on passes out of the body through urine giving way to weakness in body, though the body contains large amount of glucose.
Risk Factors
- People with family member having diabetes.
- People with obesity.
- Older people, especially older women who are overweight are at the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
- For unknown reasons, whites are more prone than Asian, African and American Indians. In the same manner the Type 2 Diabetes occurs more often among African Americans, Hispanics and American Indians.
Causes
In the case of Type 1 Diabetes, the body’s immune system is affected causing it to attack the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas. The reason why this happens is unknown so far, to scientists, but according to the highly supported belief, heredity is the major cause. In addition other factors including stress, food allergies and viruses are also significant in aggravating this type of Diabetes.
Many factors are attributed as a cause of Type 2 Diabetes, varying from person to person. These factors includes being insulin-resistant, having reduced beta cells and like Type 1 diabetes, heredity. In addition a sedentary life style, persistent use of certain medications, aging and obesity has also been scientifically approved of being a cause of this type of diabetes.
Types of Diabetes
Diabetes is mainly divided in three types as follows:
- Type 1 diabetes: This type of Diabetes, also known as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or juvenile diabetes comes under the category of autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune are those diseases in which the immune system of the body starts working against one of its own body part. In the case of Type 1 Diabetes, the immune system attacks the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas and eventually destroys them.
- Type 2 diabetes: The Type 2 Diabetes, also known as noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or NIDDM, is the most common of all the three. In this type of Diabetes, pancreas do produces insulin, but for some reason the body ceases to use this insulin effectively.
- Gestational diabetes: This type of Diabetes is a temporary one which develops during pregnancy and disappears after it. But women who have had experienced gestational diabetes are at a greater risk to develop Type 2 Diabetes in their later years.
Symptoms & Signs
- Extreme hunger & thirst
- Excessive urination.
- Feeling very tired.
- Unexplained weight loss.
- Tingling in hand or feet.
- Blurry vision.
- Dry skin.
- Slowly healing sores.
- More often infections.
People may have some or none of these symptoms before they are diagnosed of Diabetes. In the case of Type 2 Diabetes these symptoms are often followed by nausea, vomiting or stomach pains.
Diagnosis
Type 1 Diabetes is diagnosed simply by testing the levels of glucose in blood. According to world health organization the fulfillment of on or more of the following conditions confirms the presence of Type 2 Diabetes in a person:
- Fasting plasma glucose (plasma glucose test taken before breakfast) is over 6.7 mmol/l on two separate occasions.
- Random plasma glucose (blood glucose measured at a random time) is over 10 mmol/l.
- 2 hour blood glucose during glucose tolerance test is over 10 mmol/l
- Corresponding values for plasma glucose are 7.8 mml/L and 11.1 mmol/l.
Type 2 Diabetes is diagnosed equally simply. This is done through the measurement of glucose in the blood.

- Corresponding values for plasma glucose are 7.8 mml/l and 11.1 mmol/l
Gestational diabetes is diagnosed through the glucose tolerance test, in this test women are asked to drink a solution of glucose and later on are tested for signs of glucose in blood. If the test result is positive, that is if the blood carries glucose hours after the solution has been taken, the patient is diagnosed of diabetes.
Prevention
There is no virus that causes diabetes neither it is contagious, it is only a problem with the internal organs and systems of a body such as the beta cells producing insulin or the immune system. It is generally believed that almost all types of Diabetes are nutrition and lifestyle based thus the best way to prevent Diabetes is to follow a regular and healthy pattern of life.
Treatment
In Type 1 Diabetes, the body is in deficit of insulin. Thus its treatment requires multiple daily insulin injection in addition to planned physical exercises, blood sugar level testing and a carefully designed diet.
The Type 2 Diabetes is also treated diet control, exercises, blood sugar level testing and insulin with an addition of oral medications in some cases.
Diabetes is also cured through certain surgical treatments:
- Pancreas transplantation.
- Islet cell transplantation (islet cells produce insulin).
- Artificial pancreas development.
- Genetic manipulation (fat or muscle cells that don’t normally make insulin have a human insulin gene inserted — then these "pseudo" islet cells are transplanted into people with type 1 diabetes).
But all these treatments are still in their juvenile stages and need a lot of progress to be regarded as successful.

Other Natural Supplements
- Linoleic acid.
- Omega –6 fatty acids.
- Omega –3 fatty acids.
Dietary Guidelines
- Consume food with lesser amount of sugar.
- Increase garlic in food since it helps in building insulin.
Home Care Suggestions
Physical activity is the best suggestion to care for diabetes. In this respect walk regularly, stretch daily and take some light aerobic exercises.
Mind/Body Considerations
Diabetes is characterized by a weak body, for it is necessary to keep the body in toned through several exercises. Further, diabetics are found to feel excessive hunger and thirst. This weakness and excessive hunger often leads to fluctuation in moods and increased irritation, thus try to keep the mind relaxed.
