Introduction
Alopecia basically means hair loss. Hair loss can occur at any age and any time. It usually is for temporary i.e.; the hairs grow again. But in some cases the hairs never grow again. Usually it starts at the age of 40 to 45 in men. Gradually the hair become less and less. A person may experience too much of hair fall due to many reasons. Hairs start falling at around 25 to 30 years of age. Alopecia can occur not only on head but also on other parts of the body. Their symptoms are different. If complete loss of hair is noticed it is called alopecia universalis. Thinning of hair and baldness should be taken noticed. This is not a normal thing especially in young age.
Causes
There can be several cause of alopecia and they may differ from person to person. Sometimes it is because of inheritance, the genes which carry the code for hair are inherited from parents to off spring. Some times due to pregnancy, anemia or other disease can cause hair fall. People who suffer from typhoid experience a lot of hair fall because high fever can damage the roots of hair resulting in hair fall. Malnutrition is another cause of hair fall. Some people take excess of tension and stress which results in hair fall. Certain chemicals can also result in alopecia. Alopecia areota is a kind of alopecia where the hair fall is noticed in patches. The reasons for this kind of hair fall remain unexplained. Usually the hair grows back to normal after a while, if proper care is taken. Too much exposure to chemicals such as hair dies, hot curlers or streaking of hair can also result in hair loss. Malnutrition and being underweight is also included in its causes.

People of any age can experience hair fall but some people inherit it from their parents.

Symptoms & Signs
Usually hair loss is not followed by regrowth of hair.
At first there is only thinning of the hair which gradually becomes worse.
Patches of baldness appears at different areas.
Shedding of hair becomes abnormally prominent

Diagnosis
Sudden hair loss with out any prominent reason needs to be cared. One should consult the doctor as soon as possible. Thyroid, anti nuclear antigen test and hormone study can help a lot to diagnose the disease.
Prevention
If it is not hereditary hair loss then you can prevent your self from alopecia.
Avoid using too hot water for hair wash. Do not brush your hair when they are wet. Proper oiling twice a week adds life to hair. Proper diet can save from early hair fall. Don’t wash your hair daily it can extract away the natural moistness from your hair which results in brittle and dry hair which are easy to break away. Don’t apply every new product coming in the market as it can have unknown reactions. Try to keep a mild and medicated shampoo: it is better than beauty shampoos.
Treatment
Mostly people don’t notice it at early stages, which result in worse conditions. How ever there are many treatments available to deal with the disease, such as herbal therapy, homoeopathic and other medicinal use can prevent from further hair loss. Some people opt for surgery as a substitute of their hair. This surgery is called hair transplant.

Proper diet can prevent from hair loss at an early age. Vitamins such as vitamin A, B complex, C and E are very good for hair health. Try to make them apart of your normal diet.
