What is Homocysteine Urea?
Homocysteine is an amino acid (a building block of protein) produced in the human body. An increase in it’s production may lead to artery blockage, high cholesterol levels, and an increased ability to clot blood leading to blood vessel blockages.
Experts estimated that 10 percent of the risk of cardiovascular disease can be attributed to high homocysteine levels. Normal homocysteine levels range between 1 and 10 micromoles per liter.
Symptoms
- High cholesterol
- Arteriosclerosis
- Blood vessel blockages
Causes
In a healthy individual, homocysteine is changed into beneficial amino acids for the body.Other possible causes may include low thyroid hormone levels, kidney disease, psoriasis, certain medications or inherited deficiencies in the enzymes used to process homocysteine in the body.
