Infertility Male
Introduction
Infertility means being unable to conceive even after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse. The reasons for this failure could be of male and female both. Male infertility means that the male is unable to father a child even after 1 year of intercourse without any protection. Male infertility’s first reason may be testes of male which are the sole responsible factors, remain unable to produce required quantity of sperms. There are several other complicated factors contributing to it. The infertility has been divided into two types: 1st is Primary infertility; in this the male remains unable to impregnate women for the first time, meaning before the birth of a child. 2nd is the secondary infertility when the couple remain unable to conceive for the second or third time after a child’s birth.5% of the couples have this problem of infertility because of ejaculation problems. 50% of male problems result in a couple’s infertility.
Alternative Names
Barrenness or male sterility is the word used for this disease.
Causes
The causes of male infertility are mostly concerned with the production of sperms and progress and condition of testes. This is called testicular failure. The testes are located outside the male’s body where the temperature is relatively less than the rest of the body. Low temperature is favorable for effective production of sperms. The vericoceles are the veins in scrotum which are responsible for the flow of blood. These veins are sometimes dilated that is the blood does not drain properly when they are over filled by blood and can affect the production of sperm. This is one of the causes of male infertility. There are other factors too such as; abnormality in seminal fluid. If the seminal fluid is very thick it may become difficult for the sperms to reach the uterus resulting in infertility. Sometimes the sperm carrying ducts or tubes may be blocked or their passage may become narrow which causes hindrance for the semen to flow. In some cases it happens that a person is born with the absence of vas deferens. These tubes are sometimes blocked or hindered by something else; this blockage can be because of hernia if the person is not born with the problem. Some people have this problem because of their own immunological responsiveness. The body produces anti bodies against the sperms produced in the body. Testicular trauma or infection in the testes can also result in infertility. Production of these anti bodies remains a question to solve. These anti bodies follow the sperm to the uterus and act negatively against sperm and hence it remains impossible to conceive.
Sometimes it is a result of having problem with erection and ejaculation of the sperm into the female body. There are many drugs that can result in male infertility. Some of the drugs for hypertension, ulcer, antifungal, cancer or arthritis can cause the testes to produce low amount of semen which causes the failure to conceive. Sometimes the hormonal imbalance can be a cause of this disease. The ejaculation problem can be because of having too much intercourse, which may affect it. The hormones are produced within the body which indicates the testes to ejaculate the semen but if they are not working properly they can cause a problem of ejaculation. Even the sperm production is also effected by hormones. The infection in the testes can also be a cause of infertility in males. However all of the above causes can be treated.
Risk Factors
- People who use birth control methods can suffer from infertility in future.
- Weak people can become a victim of it.
- Having too much sex can lead to this problem.
- People who use anti biotics can suffer from it. The drugs can have a bad effect on sperm production, erection and ejaculation.
Symptoms & Signs
If a couple remains unable to conceive after 12 months of intercourse which is unprotected.
There can be primary or secondary infertility as we have discussed above. It is not important that a couple which was able to conceive can conceive again without any problems, there can be complications which are categorized as secondary infertility. The surveys state that in 60% of the cases the male factor is found to be responsible for infertility not the female. This is the only symptom which has been noted so far.
Diagnosis
Due to the advancement in technology, there are several kinds of treatments and ways of diagnosis. To diagnose infertility in male there are many ways out of which some are these:
- In the process of diagnosis medical and surgical history should be known.
- Semen analysis is very important.
- Testicular biopsy.
- Postcoital test (PCT).
Prevention
Having safer ways of sex can reduce the danger of infertility. Try to avoid the birth control measures which can produce infertility in later stages. Even if you want to adopt any kind of birth control measure you need to consult your physician first.
Treatment
There are several ways to treat infertility in males.
Assisted reproduction.
Drugs and surgery.
For the sake of treatment processes like electro ejaculation, sperm retrieval and washing, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, gamete intra fallopian transfer, in vitro fertilization can be used. If the cause is testerone deficiency then medication can be used for the treatment. Surgery can also be done in order to remove any kind of obstruction such as hernia’s operation. Removing the vericoceles can result in increased sperm production.
