The effects of Damiana are to stimulate the genito-urinary tract, acting as a mild aphrodisiac and also produces a euphoric effect.
Universally all cultures have tried to find substances that will effect libido and would improve the love life. Damiana is reputed to be an aphrodisiac as well as a tonic stimulant and diuretic. Damiana grows as a small shrub in hot humid climates through Mexico, South America, Central America and the West Indies

In folk medicine, damiana has a reputation for being an aphrodisiac, a substance that heightens sexual desire and enhances sexual performance. It has also been used to treat conditions a diverse as bedwetting, constipation, depression, and headaches. No evidence from scientific studies supports any of these uses, however.
In studies of laboratory animals, damiana has shown unpredictable effects on blood sugar levels. In one study, a damiana extract appeared to decrease blood sugar in animals with diabetes. Conversely, later studies showed no effect. In addition, earlier studies associated weight loss with using damiana. Both of these potential uses of damiana need further research before they can be recommended for use.

Damiana is said to strengthen the nerves and it is a mild laxative.
Side Effects :
Excessive long term use of this herb may be toxic to the liver, similar to alcohol. Some reported conditions in which the herb is contraindicated are; pregnancy, lactating women, diverticulitis, urinary tract disorder and ulcerative colitis.
