Tar dive Dyskinesia

Introduction
Tardive Dyskinesia is a serious and irreversible neurological disorder. People at any age can become a victim of Tardive Dyskinesia. Tar dive means “late” where as Dyskinesia literally means “movement disorder”. If this condition goes on for a long period of time, it has worse effects. Only if it is diagnosed in earlier stages can it be reversed other wise it’s very difficult to cure the disorder. The movements are involuntary in this disorder. If the cause is caught earlier, than it can be cured but the idea is not a easy one, it may be difficult or impossible. These movements are entirely involuntary. The symptoms may take 3 months to a year to show up. Sometimes the Tardive movements are confused with the stereotypy but both are entirely different things. The Tardive movements are not controlled by the patient as it is considered to be in stereotypy and also the movements in Tardive are less complicated than in stereotypy. There have been two divisions of the tardive disorder; limb-truncal and orofacial. This division of the TD is made on topographic factors. These can be further divided into its sub branches because of their symptoms.

Alternative Names
There is no alternative name for Tardive Dyskinesia.

Causes
Tardive Dyskinesia is usually the reaction of the chemicals on neurological cells. Tardive Dyskinesia occurs due to blockage of the neuron receptors, the dopamine. Dopamine plays an important role in receiving and sending the information or order of reaction from where the message came from. When the body receives the message late it reacts late. This working of dopamine can be slowed down or blocked by the use of tranquilizers but to the contrast of our thinking if the tranquilizer dosage is ceased the condition can become worse. Use of drugs such as antihistamines, fluoxetine, amoxapine or use of any anti tricyclic anti depressants and tricyclic tranquilizer can cause TD. Some times the gastrointestinal disorders are prescribed with such medicine which can harm the neuron system of the patient. The anti depressants usually contain such chemicals which affect the efficiency of brain cells especially the receptors. If a person is affected by TD the other members of the family can also be affected although they may not have the signs then but it may be found later. The anti psychotics if stopped the patient may suffer from worse effects. Neuroleptic with high potency as well as low potency can cause this disorder.

Risk Factors
  • Mostly African Americans are found to be prone to Tardive Dyskinesia.
  • Aged people are more prone to tardive as their nervous system becomes weak.
  • Females are at a higher risk of developing Tardive Dyskinesia.
  • Young men also become victim. They can suffer from tardive dystonia or tardive blepharospasm.
  • Although this was just an approximate idea, any one at any age can have tardive dyskinesia.
  • Patients who are having treatment of psychotic diseases such as schizophrenia and being treated with tricyclic for years, can become a victim of TD. Usually this number is about 15- 20%.

Symptoms & Signs
The signs and symptoms include all the involuntary actions of lip smacking, tongue twitching, feet tapping, or involuntary blinking of the eye. These symptoms are so minor that the patient may hardly notice them in the beginning. Jerking and stiffening of any or all parts of the body is the prominent symptom referring to the presence of TD in the patient. These symptoms may be continuous. Rapid movements of arms, leg and trunk are also a part of symptoms of TD. Sometimes the patient may be noticed moving fingers as rapidly as he or she is doing some unseen work.

Diagnosis
It cannot be diagnosed by any blood test or x-ray. It can only be determined by the doctor after examining the patient’s medical history. The family’s views can add to it. The presence of the symptoms shows the doctor that there have been some effects of TD.

Prevention
  • The use of neuroleptic should be restricted.
  • Don’t use neuroleptic with out the consultation and recommendation of the doctor.
  • Don’t take pills for sleep disorder or anxiety.
  • If you have been using tranquilizer and eventually you come to know that you are suffering from TD then you must not stop using the tranquilizer as it can worsen the effects.
  • Don’t use any drugs without the instructions of your doctor.

Treatment
There is no specific treatment which can assure you to get rid of TD but the treatment may vary from patient to patient according to their conditions. First thing which should be done is to minimize the dosage of the neuroleptic drugs. Using dopamine may help to reduce the extremities of the disorder.

Mind/Body Considerations
Daily exercise can make you healthy. Exercises which include jogging and running should also be done: it will add to the stamina. Wake up early in the morning and sleep early to avoid the use of tranquilizers.
