Tonsillitis

Introduction
Your son is complaining about pain in his throat. Give his tonsils a check; if they are red and swollen he might be suffering from tonsillitis. Tonsillitis is a condition in which the tonsils (masses of lymphatic tissues located at the back of the throat) become inflamed, infected with some virus or bacteria. It is not usually very serious unless it develops into a tonsillar abscess. This tonsillar abscess is severe enough to lead to breathing blockage, secondary ear infections and adenoid problems.

Alternative Names
There is no alternative name for tonsillitis.

Causes
The causes of tonsillitis are divided as bacterial or viral. BACTERIAL CAUSES Streptococcus bacterium is the cause behind most of the tonsil infections and abscesses in children, it also causes strep throat. This infection could result into some serious fatal complications such as the development of rheumatic fever, glomerulonephritis. Other serious complications resulting from streptococcus infection are scarlet fever, sinusitis, and pneumonia. VIRAL CAUSES The virus causing common cold or influenza is also held responsible for tonsillitis. The Epstein-Barr virus causes the rapid enlargement of tonsils resulting from a throat infection called infectious mononucleosis. In young children this infection is not very severe, and could be regarded as a common cold or flu. But in adults, it could be serious enough to affect the liver and spleen and even lead to jaundice.

Risk Factors
If the elders stop their children from eating out on their own, they are very right in doing so. Since this is the most vulnerable age (3-7) for tonsillitis to attack the tonsils. It is because in this age tonsils play their most active infection fighting role and thus are open to any coming change.

Symptoms & Signs
  • A sore throat swollen and inflamed.
  • A white discharge or sots are sometimes identified on the tonsils.
  • Difficulty in swallowing.
  • A distinctive speech, as if the patient is speaking with something stuffed in the mouth.
  • Trouble in breathing or intervals of sleep apnea.
  • A low grade fever often accompanies the other symptoms.

Diagnosis
You could diagnose your child’s tonsillitis very easily on your own. All you need for this a spoon and a torch. Put the back of the spoon on child’s tongue and ask him/her to say ‘aaaahhh’. Now throw light on the back of the child’s throat and look for any visible symptom such as redness or swollen tonsils. If the result is positive, visit a doctor. The doctor then looks for further complications if any. For instance the doctor will perform the strep test to look for streptococcus infection. If the patient proves to have symptoms then the doctor might further suggest a throat culture. The test for mononucleosis is somewhat difficult. It needs a blood test where the blood is checked for the presence of abnormal white blood cells or antibodies to this virus.

Prevention
  • Avoid company of any one with tonsillitis in order to keep your self being affected from it.
  • A surgery is often suggested for patients with serious cases in order to prevent future problems.
  • A prompt appointment with the doctor as soon as the symptoms are observed could save complications or even tonsillitis.

Treatment
Tonsillitis is traditionally treated with antibiotics, with different prescription for different conditions. But if you are taking an anti biotic you should very well keep in mind that a complete course is very necessary, leaving the medicines in the middle might allow the infection to re-grow. Tonsillitis is even removed through surgery, this process is called tonsillectomy, and it in no way affects the child’s immunity.
