Alzheimer’s disease
Introduction
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a form of dementia which causes brain disorder. Older people are at greater risk of having it. The mental disorder interrupts in daily routine of the sufferer. It is the disorder of that part of brain which controls thoughts, memory and language. The brain tissues degenerate resulting in memory loss and feelings. Life becomes miserable as one can not think and rationalize matters. This is one of the diseases causing deaths in U.S.A. every year.
Causes
Cause may vary from patient to patient. It can be inherited. In autopsy it is noticed that people suffering from AD have clots of protein known as, nuerofibrillary and amyloid plaques. No other prominent progress has been noticed for identifying causes of AD. It may occur due to the disturbance of the nuerofluids. Environmental factor also plays a part in it. Poor nutrition is also another factor. Some scientists have been working on relation between zinc and aluminum in the person suffering with AD.
Risk Factors
Older people are at risk of having AD especially after 50 years of age.
Inheritance is not always the case but it can be inherited.
Symptoms & Signs
Unable to recognize people and forgetting recent events and daily activities. A person is unable to make judgments in daily household work. In the worst case a person may become speechless and change in personality and behavior may also be noticed. Appetite is also lost and one is unable to take care of itself.
Diagnosis
A diagnosis in time is very important as it can lead to severe conditions if not taken care. A doctor may test the memory of a person at the first meeting then he may check the physical state of a person. Verbal test can be useful. EEG, brain scans and blood test are also used to diagnose the disease. If any of these indicate a protein clog in the brain, the person is suffering from AD
Prevention
Possibly there can be no prevention against it as the cause is not clearly understood yet. Vitamin E has shown some positive results in this regard as it slows down the process of AD. As zinc and aluminum are suspected to have some negative affect on the patient they should be avoided. Keeping the mind busy with creative activities can help in some case
