Back pain

Introduction
After a long tiring day when one goes to bed, one usually feels that it is difficult to straighten the back. One can not relax as usual but, gradually the intensity of pain decreases and one can relax normally. Well, what is this? This is actually the back pain that is causing the trouble. It is very common and every one at least once in life experiences it. It is as common as flu or common cold. It is not noticed in young children. Its causes are numerous and it can be without any reasoning. Back pain is basically related to the working of the tissues and ligaments which are attached to the back bone. It is most commonly found at the lower back portion. The pain can be acute or mild. In some cases the pain is chronic.

Causes
The most common cause of the back pain is physical and mental stress. Lower back pain is the most common in which the lower portion of the back is affected and it becomes troublesome for the person to lie down, work or even stand straight. Our body is like a machine. What happens when a machine is not used for a long period of time? Obviously it will stop working. The same case is with our body. The ligaments and muscles surrounding the back bone are affected and cause pain, but it’s not even necessary that the pain caused is due to damage to the back bone’s tissues or ligament. Long working hours and stress can cause the pain. Besides physical stress mental stress can also be one of the reasons. The reason for this is that the spine which is a part of brain runs through the middle of the back bone. When you are going through stress the back bone is also affected. It can be said that the back pain is some times because of some neural disorder. It may also be noticed that people who suffer from sprains and strains are also suffering from back pain. Sedentary jobs like sitting all day long in same position or standing still for most of the day can also be a cause. Some times small injuries which remain unnoticed can become severe and cause back pain. Internal organ diseases or infections can also be a contributing factor in. Obesity can affect the working of the back bone and the muscles around it. If the disk and the spine is affected it can result in back pain. Anxiety, depression and poor sitting or standing postures can also cause problems. If any of the constituents of the spine are injured or infected, it can result in back pain. Smoking also plays its part. Lifting heavy objects and psychological reasons can also be behind the pain. Other causes are congenital disorders, wear and tear of the herniated disc, osteoarthritis or genetic factors.

Risk Factors

    Symptoms & Signs
The signs and symptoms include the following: If the back pain stays for long it indicates that it is chronic back pain, if it automatically recovers in less than three weeks then it is acute back pain. This pain is usually noticed when one goes to bed at night. How ever the pain can be felt during the day too. The movement becomes restricted and in severe cases it can even be impossible to bent down or move the back according to will. It can have its effect on other body parts.

    Diagnosis
The acute pain is for a short time but has greater intensity than the chronic pain which persists for longer periods. The diagnosis of the back pain can be made by the doctor after a complete physical check up and observing the symptoms. Weakness or numbness in legs and lower back are prominent features of back bone pain. X-rays, MRI, CT scan, or bone scans can help in revealing the cause. Electro diagnostic studies can assist the physician to analyze if there is nerve damage.

    Prevention
The back pain can be prevented by analyzing the cause. If the cause is obesity, body weight should be reduced. Try to keep the muscles and back bone straight while sitting or walking. Maintain a perfect posture to avoid back pain. Avoid lifting heavy weights as it puts stress on the back bone instead try to pick heavy objects by putting stress on your knees.

    Treatment
The best treatment is by taking rest. It is usually seen that by resting, 80% of the pain is healed. Resting for a while during the day or abstaining from the normal activities can help in reducing the pain but the proper treatment includes medicine and appropriate exercise.
