Eczema

Introduction
Eczema is basically a skin disease which is chronic. It is a skin condition which causes the skin to become red and irritated. When eczema is observed in childhood it may disappear by time and age of the child, therefore it is not very serious at that stage but if it causes sever pain one should consult the doctor. There are many kinds of eczema, to name a few, Atopic eczema, Nummular eczema and Hand eczema. Among these, the most common is the Atopic eczema. The causes are not known with assurance but still research is being done to find its causes and precautions. Eczema is not as contagious as other skin diseases. It is very common in U.S. and usually 3% of people are suffering from it.

Alternative Names
Eczema is also known as dermatitis.

Causes
The scientists have not been able to find out the exact causes of eczema but there are some estimates. Eczema is usually caused by some underlying skin allergies. One of the causes is the changing temperature and humidity. Many times it is noticed that exposure to water for a long period can result in eczema. The period of the ailment may last from 1 week to many years. Constant direct exposure to sun can also cause eczema as it takes away all the moisture from the skin leading to eczema. Certain irritating chemicals can also be included in this regard. It can also be caused by irritants. Usually members of the same family are found with eczema, which indicates that this may be is an inherited disease shifting from generation to generation. Wearing tight and synthetic clothes can worsen the condition.

Risk Factors
This condition of skin is most commonly observed in infants up to 36 years of age. People who have asthma and certain other skin allergies are more prone to eczema. Usually any person can get eczema at any age; there are no age restrictions for this chronic skin condition.

Symptoms & Signs
  • The disease usually starts in infants, it is called infantile eczema. The skin of the sufferer is very dry and itchy and skin lesions are prominent. The body parts where eczema mostly occurs are chest, neck, face, hands and feet.
  • Pain and smoldering sensation in the affected area.
  • In infants the signs are prominent on cheeks and scalp with intense itching.
  • The crusting lesions are seen on face.
  • Itching is constant.
  • In elder children it is found more widely.
  • The vesicles and papules are generally found on both sides of the body but it is not a must.
  • Redness and thickened skin is found all over the affected area of the body.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis can be made by examining the affected area. Each type of eczema can be diagnosed separately as per its symptoms. If the medical history of patient reveals vitamin B, allergy and asthma problems, it indicates the presence of Atopic eczema. There is no specific test to diagnose the disease but complete clinical examination is made by the doctor by asking questions about the disorder and time duration of the symptoms. Health background of family can be of great help. Food allergy test can also be helpful to diagnose the cause of disease.

Prevention
If the cause is known then only the prevention can be made but unfortunately the exact cause of eczema is not known so there is no such perfect prevention which can assure one may not have eczema. Don’t scratch the skin as it peels off the superficial layer of skin and can be further painful and can also cause further skin infections. . Avoid working in dusty and sunny atmosphere for longer periods.

Treatment
Prevention is not there but there certainly there is treatment of eczema. You should consult your doctor for proper treatment. Don’t try self medication.
