Papaya

What is PAPAYA.
The papaya is a short-lived, fast-growing, woody, large herb to 10 or 12 feet in height. It generally branches only when injured. All parts contain latex. The hollow green or deep purple trunk is straight and cylindrical with prominent leaf scars. Its diameter may be from 2 or 3 inches to over a foot at the base.

What is PAPAYA?
An herbaceous tree growing very rapidly to a height of 25 feet, papaya has segmented leaves, yellow flowers, and large black-seeded yellow to orange fruits weighing up to 11 pounds. Native to tropical America, papaya is now cultivated in tropical regions throughout the world. Papaya juice, shoots, and latex were used in Mayan herbal medicine. Although the papaya is best known for its delicious fruit, fresh papaya leaves were used medicinally as a dressing for wounds by the aborigines indigenous to the tropical areas where the plant grew. They also wrapped meat in the leaves to make the flesh more tender.

Medical Significance
Papaya juice or tablets, however, can be taken freely without any fear of rebounding. Papaya's main medicinal use is as a digestive agent. The leaves and fruit can both be used to support sound digestion (the unripe fruit is especially effective). In the Fiji islands a filtrate of the inner bark is used to treat toothache, while the fresh milky white sap (latex) is applied directly on large boils and is also utilized to treat wounds. The seeds gently expel worms. The latex has a similar but more violent effect. The flowers may be taken as an infusion to induce menstruation. A decoction of the ripe fruit is helpful for treating persistent diarrhea and dysentery in children. The ripe fruit is mildly laxative.

Active Constituents:
Papaya contains the digestive enzyme papain. This enzyme is similar to pepsin and contains various proteolic enzymes such as peptidase, and rennin-like coagulating enzymes, an amylolytic enzyme, and an enzyme that has a weak action on fats. This enzyme functions in acid, alkaline, and neutral media. The seeds contain a glycoside, caricin, and myrosin. These two compounds, when mixed, produce a mustard-like odor. The alkaloid carpine has been found in the leaves. There are also appreciable amounts of vitamins C and E

Side Effects
Papaya may be a strong allergen. There have been several cases where pharmacists who have worked with a product have developed a strong allergy to papaya. Other dangers include a possible destruction of the esophageal wall with perforation if large amounts have been used.
