Description
Pau D’Arco is a tall tree, around 150 feet high with a base diameter of 4-6 feet. It has large purple flowers and can be found in the rainforest and parts of tropical South America. The medicinal part is the bark possessing antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, astringent and laxative properties. The bark is also popular for construction purposes ranging from boats, farm tools to houses.
Historical Use
Pau D’Arco was first used by the Inca civilization. Tribes indigenous to the rainforest have used the wood of the tree for centuries to make their hunting bows. The Callawaya tribe of South America has employed it for it’s healing power since 1000 years. The Guarani and Tupi Indians utilized the bark to treat anemia, boils, colds, malaria and snakebites.
