Introduction
Irritable bowel’s syndrome is an intestinal syndrome in which the intestines of a person are not working properly which results in changes in bowel movements and pain in intestinal area. It is the chronic disorder of intestine or the colon, which creates pain in the reign of it. So far there has been no cure for irritable bowel’s syndrome. But there are treatments for it which can at least lessen the severity of the pain. This disease affects the gastrointestinal portion of the body. It is one of the most common disorders of the intestine. It is observed that 5 out of 1000 people suffer from this chronic condition of intestine. Once it was believed that IBS is purely a psychological disorder but recent research has rejected this idea.
Alternative Names
Pylorospasm, spastic colon, functional colitis, mucous colitis, or functional dyspepsia are the different names given to irritable bowel’s syndrome.
Causes
The cause of irritable bowel’s syndrome has not been understood fully but there are some assumptions regarding to this condition that it might be a result of these causes which have been noticed in patients usually. It is assumed that the body’s natural chemicals can be a cause of irritable bowels syndrome. This chemical makes the gastrointestinal walls more sensitive to what ever comes in. Other than this cause; there are many factors which are suspected to affect the working of colon and large intestine. Eating habits, medical treatment and emotional distress are believed to cause this syndrome. One thing which is sure is that this is a functional disorder of the colon or large intestine. This can be a result of any change occurring within the body. Diet which includes such substances which can affect the working of the intestine in negative way can be a cause of IBS. Such a diet which can result in constipation and diarrhea are suspected to produce IBS. Gas problems can also result in IBS. Over eating, hormonal changes during menstrual cycle and bad eating habits can also be a cause of irritable bowel’s syndrome. Lactose intolerance is also suspected to cause IBS. Eating high fatty acids can also be a cause of it. Smoking and alcohol also are suspected to cause IBS.
Risk Factors
- It is commonly observed in the ages from 20 to 30.
- Men and women are equally affected by it but usually women are targeted.
- People who have IBS in their family history are more prone to it..
- People who have psychological traumas are more affected by IBS.
- People who panic easily are also prone to it.
Symptoms & Signs
- Pain and cramps in intestinal area or colon.
- Feeling of nausea.
- Vomiting becomes frequent.
- Gaseous and bloating is observed.
- Diarrhea or constipation for a long period of time. They may occur alternately or constantly.
- Tenderness in abdominal area.
- Loss of appetite.
- Anxiety or depression is felt.
- Emotional distress is also one of its symptoms.
Diagnosis
Physical examination, stool test and complete study of the medical history of the patient can lead to diagnosing the disease. X-rays and endoscopy can be of great help in the process of diagnosis.
Prevention
If the cause is known prevention can be made against the cause but in the case of irritable bowel’s syndrome the cause remains unidentified. However, sometimes the high fiber intake is good for some patients where as in other cases it is not good for them.
Treatment
There has been no prevention but treatment is there to cure the patient and at least to lessen the pain of cramps in their abdominal reign. The treatment is given according to the symptoms and the intensity of the syndrome. Dietary changes and sometimes the supplement may help a person to get relief from the intensity of the disease. Psychotherapy is also used to treat irritable bowel’s syndrome. Antispasmodic drugs are also used to treat constipation in order to treat irritable bowel’s syndrome.
