Red Root

Botanical Name
Ceanothus americanus

Other Names
New Jersey Tea, Jersey tea, mountain-sweet, red root, Walpole tea, wild snowball, wild snowball, New Jersey Tea Tree, bobea.

Parts Used
Bark of the root

Introduction
Red root is been used as a gargle for inflammations and irritations in the mouth and throat, particularly for swollen tonsils. American Indians used a tea made from the whole plant for skin problems (including skin cancer and venereal sores). The tea may help raise a patient’s spirits when despondency sets in during illness.

Historically it was believed that gargling with a strong tea every two hours will reduce sore, swollen tonsils. If tonsils are very sore and swollen, make a swab and work around good and then gargle. It will reduce very badly enlarged tonsils, and the trouble will rarely recur. It is also believed to be useful for spleen problems.

Constituents
The leaves are said to contain tannin, a soft resin and bitter extract, a green colouring matter similar to green tea in colour and taste, gum a volatile substance, lignin, and a principle called Ceanothine

Medicinal Action and Uses
Astringent, antispasmodic, anti-syphilitic expectorant and sedative, used in asthma, chronic bronchitis, whooping-cough, consumption, and dysentery; also as a mouth-wash and gargle, and as an injection in gonorrhoea, gleet and leucorrhoea. This plant contains a powerful alkaloid called sanguinarin, which can cause nausea and vomiting, and burning pains in the stomach. It is fatal in large doses. The burning quality of the plant is of most significance in the homeopathic remedy. Sanguinaria is used for respiratory problems, such as asthma, bronchitis, inflammation of the pharynx (which is between the tonsils and the larynx), and nasal or laryngeal polyps. The first symptoms include dryness, rawness, and burning in the mucous membranes, and later phlegm. The remedy is also given for indigestion, coughs that are typically dry and spasmodic.

Dosage
Infusion- Steep 1 tsp. root-bark in 1 cup water. Take 1 to 2 cups a day. Tincture: Take 10 to 20 drops in water, three or four times a day.
