Introduction
Samambaia is a large, creeping fern with a dividing rhizome system. Samambaia is found in the rain forests of South America. The medicinal parts are the roots possessing anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, diaphoretic, diuretic, hypotensive and sudorific properties.
Historical Importance
Indigenous tribes of the Amazon forest such as the Boras, Peruvian and Creole employed and still use the dried root for fever, cancer and psoriasis. The fresh root was grated and brewed into a tea to treat whooping cough and renal problems. Both forms of the root are still used as a decoction in ritualistic baths for infants.
