Introduction
Sarsaparilla is a large woody vine growing to 50 m in length. Sarsaparilla's root is long and tuberous supporting a ground-trailing vine with paired tendrils for climbing. Sarsaparilla is found in the Caribbean, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, South America and the West Indies. The medicinal parts are the roots possessing alterative, diuretic, diaphoretic properties and can be used as a tonic.
Historical Use and Importance
Sarsaparilla Root is said to be good for gout, rheumatism, colds, fevers, and catarrhal problems, as well as for relieving flatulence. Sarsaparilla reduces fevers by helping cool down the body and promoting perspiration. A tea made from it has also been used externally for skin problems, scrofula, ringworm, and tetters. Sarsaparilla is a mild gastric irritant due to its saponin content. The smoke of Sarsaparilla was once recommended for asthma conditions. Sarsaparilla is also very useful as a tonic, alterative, diaphoretic and diuretic. Sarsaparilla purifies the urino-genital tract, dispelling all infection and inflammation. Sarsaparilla's diaphoretic and blood-cleansing action is useful for rheumatic inflammation. Sarsaparilla also stimulates the production of reproductive hormones, and has tonic action on the sexual organs. Sarsaparilla helps to increase testosterone & progesterone levels in the body.

Side Effects
Boil slowly, 1 teaspoon of the root in a covered container of 1-1/2 pint water for about ½ hour. Cool slowly within the same. Drink cold, 1 tablespoon at a time, 1-2 cups per day
