Side Effects Or Interactions
Chromium supplements work by enhancing the effects of drugs and medications for diabetes, thus in some cases resulting in hypoglycemia. This is the reason why people with diabetes (or other disorders related to blood sugar levels) must first consult a doctor.
Over the years only one report of severe illness of a person taking more than 1000 mcg of chromium per day has been reported, without a single proof that chromium supplement was the cause of this severe illness. According to another source, chromium supplement may cause mild heart rhythm abnormalities, but once again this claim is not supported by any solid evidence.
Vitamin C is said to increase the absorption of chromium. According to a test report, extremely high concentration of chromium in a test tube resulted in chromosomal mutations in ovarian cells of hamsters.
One form of chromium called chromium picolinate is said to be altered by antioxidants in the body to a form that could create free radical damage. These changes are said to create a risk for cancer but so far no case has been reported with chromium as a cause of cancer.
Other cases attributed to the high intake of chromium are anemia and liver dysfunction due to an intake of 1200- 2400 mcg per day for four to five months. But once again whether chromium is the real cause behind these diseases is doubtful.
