Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Introduction
Prostate is a part of male reproductive system, which aids in making fluid of semen. The secretion of the prostate is mixed with the sperm which is later ejaculated outside the body. It is situated just below the bladder and surrounds the higher fraction of urethra completely. When due to any reason this prostate gland enlarges, the situation is termed as benign prostatic hyperplasia. As it is eminent from the name that this disease is benign, this means non-cancerous. It has no connection with prostate cancer. It is most commonly observed in aged people and considered as a normal part of aging. However it is curable and no dangerous effects have been found so far.

Alternative Names
Enlarge prostate and benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH).

Causes
There has been no evident proof of the causing factor of BPH but there are many suspicions in this regard. It is clearly seen that in men who get their testicles removed are least at risk of developing BPH. Male hormones are a necessary part of developing BPH but it is not a must that every man with active and normal working testicles would suffer from it. The development of dihydrotesterone can cause the cell formation and cell death to be disturbed. There has been no evident factor other than the age in contributing to enlarged prostate gland. It is suspected that it may be genetically inherited.

Risk Factors
  • The only risk factor in causing benign prostate hyperplasia is the age; it is common in men over the age of 60.
  • Black men are observed to be more affected than white men in this regard.
  • Other suspected risk factors are obesity, diabetic patients and stress.

Symptoms & Signs
  • The urine stream becomes weaker with the progress of enlargement of prostate.
  • Urinating more than once during the night.
  • Feeling pain during urinating is also a symptom.
  • Urination is interrupted because of enlarged prostate.
  • Some times the process of urination becomes involuntary.
  • Urgency of urination.
  • Irritation while urinating.
  • Frequency of urination is noticed.
  • Some people had to strain to pass urine.
  • The urinating system becomes weak.
However, sometimes the symptoms are not there. Benign prostate hyperplasia can also exist without symptoms.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis can be made on the complete medical examination of the patient. It can be further aided by asking the patient about the problems he is facing during urination and habits of it. Urine culture and urinalysis are very important in diagnosing of the enlarged prostate. An in depth rectal examination may be needed. X-rays and ultrasounds are also helpful in making a correct diagnosis.

Prevention
There is no possible prevention against it because there has been no evident factor found which is causing benign prostate hyperplasia.

Treatment
There are many ways to treat the benign prostate hyperplasia. Medication can be used to treat BPH such as alpha 1-blockers and other anti biotics. In certain cases surgery is required. The most popular treatment of the benign prostate hyperplasia is the TURP. TURP means transurethral resection of prostate. In this procedure the incision is not made but a scope is inserted through the penis. It has minimum possibility of developing any infection later because there has been no cut. It is the most effective way to treat the HBP if it needs surgery. Other ways of surgery are prostatectomy and TUIP which is similar to TURP.
