Bladder infection
Introduction
Basically bladder infection is caused by bacteria and causes inflammation of the urinary tract. This is most commonly found in women because their urinary tract, bladder, anus and vagina are closely associated. However, it’s not like that it is not found in men. It has also been noticed in men, the inflammation of kidney urethra or bladder. The bacteria can enter in vagina from the anus more easily in women as it is nearly situated to it. The presence of the disease may cause irritation and lots of other troubles but it does not have any life threatening effects. Urgent treatment can save the patient from many other complications. The frequency of people affected by bladder infection is about 33 %. About 50 to 55 % of women suffer from bladder infection once in their life span.

Causes
The main causative agent of the bladder infection is the bacteria which may enter into the bladder through vagina. The bacteria which may enter the bladder can be removed by urinating but if the urination process is not proper they remain in the bladder and multiply in number. In women it is very often noticed that after infancy women may suffer from bladder infections. There are many contributing factors in spreading and causing bladder infection. These bacteria can be transmitted by men to women and vice versa while having unprotected intercourse if the man or the women are already suffering from the bladder infection. It can be caused by menopause in women or use of catheter. An injury to the bladder can also be a cause of infection in bladder. Food allergies, diabetes and illness which are responsible for weak immune system can lead to bladder infection. Weak immune system is easy to be attacked by any bacteria or virus so people with weak immune system and those who suffer from malnutrition are easily victimized. Stress is also a contributing factor.

- Usually women are found to have been more affected by the bladder infection.
- Young age (till 1 year) boys who are not circumscribed are more likely to develop bladder infection.
- Pregnant women and diabetic patients are more prone to it.
- Men suffering from BPH (benign prostate hyperplasia) are more susceptible of developing bladder infection.
Symptoms & Signs
The symptoms may include the following:
- Blood in urine
- Pressure can be felt in lower pelvic.
- Urination becomes painful.
- Frequency of urination increases.
- Urination urgency.
- Strong smell in urine.
- Pain in lower back area.
- Fever can be a part of symptoms in young children.
- Burning sensation and irritation while urinating.
Diagnosis
A simple urine test can diagnose the bladder infection besides from the presence of symptoms. Urine culture can be done in order to make the exact diagnosis. Ultrasound can also be done to check the presence of bacteria due to stones in the bladder. Medical history and other questions can be asked from the patient to evaluate the time period and symptoms of the disease.
Prevention
- Good hygiene is very important; try to keep the anal and vaginal area dry and clean.
- Proper bathing and washing after sexual intercourse can also prevent from developing infections.
- Have proper and well balanced diet.
- Use of tampons should be avoided.
- During pregnancy, the drugs must be used as per advice of the doctor
Treatment
Prompt treatment is very necessary to treat the bladder infection because if it is not treated urgently it can be chronic and severe. In most of the cases surgery is not needed and the bacteria can be eliminated by the use of medicines only. Surgery is done in severe and complicating cases.

Dietary Guidelines
- Increase the intake of fluids such as fruit juices but do not use acidic juices.
- Drink plenty of water to keep the bladder and kidneys clean.
