There can be many types of colitis such as laxative colitis, spastic colitis, nervous colitis, and functional colitis etc. The inflammation basically occurs to fight with some foreign agents but in doing so it also harms the body and the area it covers. The inflammation and irritation is caused by the ulcerative colitis in large intestine and its lining is affected. Over 19 million people are said to have irritable bowel’s disease in all over the world. The patients of ulcerative colitis are at risk of developing cancer.
Alternative Names
The colitis is basically known as ulcerative colitis or proctitis
Causes
The basic cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown as yet but researchers are doing their work and trying to find out whether the bacteria and viruses which invade into the body are responsible for the colitis or some internal change in the immune system of the body is responsible for destroying its own cells of the intestinal lining. When a person is suffering from colitis the activity of the large intestine is greatly increased against its own inner lining of the colon. The result of all this is inflammation. The immune system of the patient becomes so weak that it is unable to recognize the invaders and its own body cells. When inflammation stays for long, it can make holes and cause sores in the lining of the colon (a part of large intestine). Emotional stress is thought to be the causative factor of the colitis. If it is not taken care immediately, it can be life threatening. Colitis is found through out the world.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis can be made on symptoms and examination of stool. If blood and white cells are present in the stool then it must be colitis. Blood test can also indicate the increasing number of white blood cells. The x-rays can be done in order to know that at what extent the intestine has been affected. Ulcerative colitis should not be confused with the infectious diarrhea. The most effective way of diagnosis of colitis is endoscopy in which the doctor can examine the lining of the intestine. Biopsy can also be useful.
