Dermatitis
Introduction
Dermatitis means skin disorder. Any kind of skin disorder can be named as dermatitis. Most commonly dermatitis is caused by inflammation of the skin. It is a chronic skin disease. Dermatitis can be found on any part of the body. It may affect the entire body skin. The most common sites for dermatitis are legs, arms, back and hands. The duration of the dermatitis can be prolonged if the disease is not taken care off. If the affected are of dermatitis is scratched the skin can also suffer from infections. It is a very common disease of skin. Causes
The cause can be the direct contact with the allergens. A direct contact with an irritant can cause dermatitis. There can be many reasons behind the occurrence of dermatitis. Dermatitis is usually caused due to some underlying skin allergies. Some skin allergies can cause dermatitis and if the underlying cause is not treated, it may reappear. The other factors can be emotional stress and anxiety which can disturb the normal body metabolism. Some researchers believe that genetics has an impact on dermatitis and its occurrence in off springs. A deficiency of fatty acids can also cause dermatitis. Use of anti biotics for long periods of time can also be a contributing factor. Other infections can also be the underlying cause of dermatitis. The period of the ailment may last from 1 week to many years. Many irritants which can cause dermatitis are chemicals, rubber, and synthetic clothes, detergents, perfumes and drugs application directly on the skin. Some people are allergic to certain material or jewelry.
Risk Factors
- This condition of skin is most commonly observed in infants up to 36 months of age.
- People who have asthma and certain other skin allergies are more prone to eczema.
- Usually anyone can get eczema at any age; there are no age restrictions for this chronic skin condition.
Symptoms & Signs
- The disease usually starts in infants, it is called infantile dermatitis. The skin of the sufferer of dermatitis is very dry, itchy and skin lesions are prominent. The sites where dermatitis mostly occurs are chest, neck, face, hands and feet.
- Blistering is also ordinary sign of dermatitis.
- Pain and smoldering sensation in the affected area.
- In infants the signs are prominent on cheeks and scalp with intense itching.
- The crusting lesions are seen on face.
- Itching is constant.
- In elder children it is found more widely.
- The vesicles and papules are generally found on both sides of the body but it is not a must.
- Redness and thickened skin is found all over the affected area of the body.
- Synthetic fibers.
- Cracks behind the ears.
- Dry skin with scale coming off.
- Usually the pain is increased during the nights.
- In some people the color of the skin may appear changed due to scratching and rubbing.
- At times the bumps may also be noticed on the skin.
- The skin may look red and blemished all over the affected area.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis can be made by examining the affected area. Family background of health can be of great help. It is necessary for the patient to note the allergy causing matter at home and in normal daily routine. A complete medical check up is needed to diagnose the dermatitis.
Prevention
The allergens which are suspected to cause dermatitis should be avoided.
Some people have allergies to certain metal jewelry; if that is the cause don’t use jewelry which irritates the skin.
Treatment
The doctor can recommend the use of corticosteroids and anti biotics to decrease the pain and inflammation. Drug therapy can cure the disease.
