Thus metabolism is a sum of all the biochemical processes taking place in the body. The term in general refers to the break down of food and its transformation into energy. These processes include processes of energy generation and use such as nutrition, digestion, absorption, elimination, respiration, circulation, and temperature regulation. Metabolism is further divided into two sub-categories, known as anabolism and catabolism. Anabolism means the building up of complex organic molecules from simpler ones, whereas catabolism involves the breakdown of the complex molecules into the simpler ones, this breakdown is often accompanied by the release of energy essential for performing several functions. The molecules that are involved in the process of anabolism and catabolism are called metabolites. The conversion of complex metabolites into simpler ones and vice versa is performed with the help of enzymes that work here as catalyst. This transformation of one molecule into another is continuous in the form of a sequence which is known as metabolic pathway. Chemical tracers are often used to detect the intermediates in this pathway. Metabolism is influenced by various factors such as exercise, food and environmental temperature. Next to creatine is the muscle enhancer androstenidione. Like creatine it is also a natural supplement but the effect is more potent. But androstenidione is said to have side effects especially if used by young people, because this supplement is responsible for building male hormone testosterone. According to scientists the use of this supplement especially by youngsters in their puberty could result in stunted growth or even liver damage. |
