Causes
The major cause of hypoglycemia is the speed with which glucose is used by the body and released into the blood stream. The former is too fast while the later is too slow in the case of the patients of hypoglycemia. Some times it is even because of the excessive insulin flowing in the blood. If you have a liver disorder, tumor of pancreas, trauma, under or overactive adrenal glands, pituitary or thyroid glands disorder, early pregnancy, diabetes or excessive consumption of carbon dioxide then be aware hypoglycemia could even attack you. Prolonged fasting is equally injurious.

Diagnosis
Since the symptoms of hypoglycemia are too vague a criteria known as Whipple’s triad must be met in order to diagnose the patient of Hypoglycemia. This process is based on the following three steps:
- First the patient must show symptoms of Hypoglycemia.
- Secondly the blood glucose level (measured while suffering from the symptoms) should be 2.5 mmol/l or less (female patients) or 2.7 mmol/l or less (male patients).
- Thirdly the symptoms must vanish on an intake of sugar.
Prevention
If you wish to control your diabetes then follow the following;
- If hypoglycemia to you is a complication of diabetes, then you should keep a check on your blood level, also you must learn to distinguish the symptoms of hypoglycemia. You should consult your physician in planning a diet.
- There should be a controlled intake of refined sugars, alcohol and caffeine.
- Fiber rich foods, fruits, vegetables and legumes should dominate the major part of your diet.
Treatment
The first step in the treatment of Hypoglycemia is to identify the cause. The immediate treatment is based on consumption of sugar; however a long term treatment includes medication and surgery. Hypoglycemia in its severe condition needs to be treated at once since this could further lead to neurological deterioration.
The doctors usually suggest glucose injections for diabetics during an attack of unconsciousness.
When the insulin producing tumors are the cause of hypoglycemia they are immediately located and removed through surgery.
