Side Effects or Interactions
The history of Co Q10 dates back to about 25 years, but up till now no side effects of the quasi vitamin have been reported. If taken ten times the normal dose, occasional attacks of diarrhea may be faced.
Some patients suffering from Coenzyme Q10 were reported to have had mild insomnia, elevated levels of liver enzymes, rashes, nausea and pain in the upper abdomen. Other side effects include dizziness, visual sensitivity to light, irritability, heartburn , headache, and fatigue.
This coenzyme is used by the body as an antioxidant. The function of antioxidant is to protect cells form free radicals (the highly reactive chemical that could damage the cells). Certain anticancer drugs are found to kill cancer cells along with causing the formation of free cells, therefore researchers are trying to develop whether coenzyme Q10 could complement cancer drugs in order to prevent the formation of free cells.
Patients who have been prescribed the cholesterol lowering drugs should better consult their doctor before taking Co Q10, because the interaction of theses drugs Co Q10 may altar body’s response to insulin and warfrain.
