What is Pyruvate?
Pyruvate is an end product of energy metabolism that our bodies make every day. Pyruvate occurs naturally in many foods including red meat and apples.

Pyruvate is made in cells during the breakdown of glucose for energy. Because it is an intermediary product in the conversion of glucose to energy, some advocates have promoted it as an energy source or as an aid to "fat burning." It is claimed that pyruvate can enhance weight loss, decrease appetite and increase energy levels, increase endurance and reduce fatigue. There are a couple of studies that suggest a small benefit to the use of pyruvate supplements in obese women. Pyruvate supplementation looks like it also reduced the rebound weight gain and increase in body fat seen at the end of dieting.

The doses of pyruvate used in the medical studies ranged from 22 to 44 grams a day, and the weight-loss difference seen was in the 2- to 6-pound range.
