Causes
There is no known cause of Mucous Colitis so far however several factors are attributed to be its cause. The body’s natural chemical is considered to be the first and foremost reason. This chemical makes the gastrointestinal walls sensitive to anything coming in. In addition, factors such as, eating habits, certain medical treatments, hormonal changes during the menstrual cycles and emotional distress are also believed to be one of the causes.

Risk Factors
  • People with a family history of Mucous Colitis.
  • People younger than 30 years of age.
  • People living in stressful conditions, especially physical or sexual abuse.
  • Women (especially in America) are more prone to this disease than men however, in other countries this is not the case. This statistics has made the dusters to conclude that the reason might not be gender instead social and cultural factors.

Symptoms & Signs
  • Abdominal pain and tenderness.
  • Diarrhea, only or alternating with constipations for a period of six months or so.
  • Bloating.

Diagnosis
No specific test is done to diagnose the presence of Mucous Colitis; however your doctor might perform a number of tests to exclude other conditions such as food allergies, intestinal infections, anemia, thyroid and other such diseases that could cause similar symptoms. The tests further depend upon the patient’s age, presentation of symptoms, severity of symptoms and the patient’s response to the initial treatment. Doctors usually begin with a history and physical examination if the patient, followed by certain blood tests. When all the other diseases have finally been excluded your doctor will confirm the presence of Mucous Colitis by the positive results of the following two procedures:
1. Your doctor will first of all order a Barium Enema X-ray. For this your doctor will ask you to administer a chalky substance into the colon through the rectum. This makes the photographs of large intestine possible through which the abnormal contractions could be easily observed.
2. A sigmoidoscope or colonoscope (a flexible tube for viewing) is inserted into the rectum. This allows the Doctor to have an internal view of the rectum, revealing the abnormal contractions.

Prevention
There is no such prevention for Mucous Colitis, but yes certain treatment is available that could help you in reducing the symptoms.

Treatment
The treatment of Mucous Colitis is difficult as well as unsatisfying. The treatment of Mucous Colitis is actually directed and based upon the symptoms. Doctors usually prescribe medication and therapies (especially psychological therapies) to reduce the symptoms in the patients.
