Bone & Joint
Introduction
Older women around the world have two things in common, the first being the grandmother of children while the second being bone and joint disorders. Bone and joint disorders are one of the most common forms of disorders found in women. Almost every other woman we come across, especially older women are complaining of problems in walking sitting etc. There is no single kind of bone disorder, instead these disorders are divided into several categories because of the minor differences they have. These are some of the common bone and joint disorders found among women, Arthritis-Rheumatoid, Osteoporosis and Osteo Arthritis.
Among the above three disorders Osteoporosis is the one whose 80% patients are usually women. Osteoporosis means “Porous Bones”. It is a condition in which the bone mass production is reduced. This reduction in bone mass production causes the bones to be fragile and thus have an increased risk of breaking. The reduction in bone mass production happens for the larger part due to loss in Calcium deposits in the bones. Osteoporosis is not really considered to be a big threat until a bone breaks. Any damage to the hip bone is really dangerous because this bone (which is extremely necessary for mobility of the body) has difficulty in healing especially at an old age. The major causes attributed to be behind Osteoarthritis are calcium deficiency, lack of sexual hormones or overactive thyroids. Calcium deficiency is one of the causes and perhaps the reason why women are told to have an increased intake of milk in their diet, which is the best known source of calcium up till now. In addition a sedentary life style could also be the reason behind women being struck with Osteoporosis. Often the real causes behind Osteoporosis are some other disorders such as osteoarthritis, scurvy, epilepsy or malnutrition.
Osteoarthritis, in addition to being a cause of Osteoporosis is also a bone and joint condition in itself. Osteoarthritis means pain in the joints. This pain is characterized by red or swollen joints which justifies the “itis” part of the name of this condition. Osteoarthritis is the most popular of the arthritis family and unlike any other form of arthritis it does not affect the entire body of the patient. Unlike Osteoporosis, this disorder is equally common among men and women. Osteoarthritis is basically divided into two categories, the primary Osteoarthritis and the Secondary one. The major difference between the two forms of the condition is the factor causing this disorder. If the cause of the condition is known it is regarded as primary one, however if it happens due to one of the following causes it is said to be the secondary Osteoarthritis
- Obesity
- Surgery of the joint structure
- Repeated trauma
- Abnormal joints at birth
- Gout
- Diabetes
- Hormonal disorders
The third form of bone and joint disorder is Arthritis-rheumatoid. It is said to be a chronic condition of the arthritis which for the major part is concerned with the peripheral joint of the body. It happens due to the damage to the membrane lining of the joint capsule. This damage may further lead to joint deformation. The cause behind Arthritis-rheumatoid is so far unknown. It is often said that it happens due to genetics. So if you have someone with this disorder in your direct family, be aware, you could be the next target.
Apart from the other three mentioned disorders there are other bone and joint disorders that could happen to women, such as:
- Arthritis
- Bursitis
- Cartilage tears
- Dislocated kneecap
- Knee instability
- Meniscus tears
- Tendonitis etc
Once you have a broken bone in old age it is difficult that it gets repaired because in old age healing takes much more time. Surgery is often tried to restore the normal, functioning of the body if some serious damage has already occurred. In addition to this docto
