Prostatic Hyperplasia

Introduction
You are 57, male and you feel that these days nature calls you more than often especially in the night! Well then the information ahead might help in resolving this issue. The chestnut size gland, located under the bladder and surrounding the urethra is called the prostate gland. It is only found in men (So, ladies! you don’t need to worry about this disease, it is something purely of MAN!!). This gland produces a certain seminal fluid which when combined with sperm makes semen, which men ejaculate. With increasing age more than 50% of men experience a growth in this gland, and this is where the problem lies. This gland when increased in size pinches off the urethra ultimately resulting in problems with urination especially an increased need of urination (the answer to your question, asked in the very first line). This condition is called Prostate Hyperplasia or Benign Prostate Hyperplasia. Believe me; you just do not need to worry at all since most of the doctors consider this condition to be extremely harmless. And one more thing that needs to be mentioned, this disease would not single you out because most of the people of your age that is about 30% of men in their 70s are its statistics.

Alternative Names
This condition is also referred to as Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy and Nodular Hyperplasia of the prostate.

Causes
The cause of Prostatic Hyperplasia is still behind the door whose key has not yet been found. The reason why it strikes one men and not the other is unknown. However this is for sure that Prostatic hyperplasia is not a contagious disease so feel free to wander around you CAN’T catch it like this.

Risk Factors
Any men and every man who is above 50 is at the risk of getting this, Scary is it! Shouldn’t be. Remember it is simply HARMLESS.

Symptoms & Signs
  • A weak or interrupted urinary system.
  • Need to urinate often in the day and especially at night.
  • Dribbling of urine.
  • An effort of pushing required in urinating. vBlood in the urine.
  • A feeling of filled bladder after urination.
  • A sudden need to urinate.

Diagnosis
It should be well kept in the mind that the above quoted symptoms do not only lead to prostatic hyperplasia. Therefore asset procedure is there that helps the doctors in diagnosing this condition. This procedure begins with a general chit chat between the patient and the doctor in which the doctor will ask you about the symptoms, he may even ask you to fill out a questionnaire that could give your doctor detailed information of your symptoms. Later on the procedure proceeds by the doctor asking you to record your daily intake of fluids and the number of times you need to urinate. The physical examination requires the doctor to feel through the wall of your rectum whether the prostate gland is enlarged or not. The doctor could as well test your urine and send it for culture. The functioning of kidneys is also examined; this is achieved through blood tests. If required further tests would be carried out by a specialist. S/he will check for specific urinary functions such as the flow rate of the urine etc. X-rays, ultrasound examinations and blood tests might compliment the entire procedure.

Prevention
The best protection against prostatic hyperplasia and other disorders of his kind is to have a regular medical check-up including a careful examination of the prostate. If you feel the presence of any of the symptoms mentioned above, catch the doctor as soon as you can.

Treatment
It is suggested that in most of the cases no treatment is required, and watchful waiting could easily help the patient with mild symptoms. This requires annual monitoring of the patient and waiting to see if the symptoms get worse. Surgery is one of the most beneficial and most risky of all the treatments. Traditionally three kinds of surgery are there to treat the patient with prostatic hyperplasia. These are as follows:
1. Trans urethral resection of the prostate (TURP), this kind of surgery involves the insertion of an instrument into the urethra through the penis. The doctor then removes parts of the prostate gland to reduce the pinching.
2. Trans urethral incision of prostate (TUIP)this is used when the prostate is not too enlarged, and once again involves the insertion of an instrument but this time the instrument is only to make one or two small cuts in the Prostate.
3. Open Surgery, it is used when the prostate is extremely enlarged. In this surgery the surgeon removes the Prostate tissues completely. Medications are also considered to be an effective treatment for prostatic hyperplasia.
