Rickets
Introduction
It is a disorder that involves softening and weakening of bones in children. The primary cause of this disease is the lack of vitamin C and D or even the lack of calcium or phosphate. It is not a common disease and usually occurs in the age of rapid growth when the body requirement for calcium and phosphate is high. Children who are 6 to 24 months old are usually found to be affected with this disorder but the disease is considerable uncommon in newborns.
Alternative Names
This disease is known an osteomalacia if it occurs in adults.
Causes
The most frequent cause of this disorder is the lack of vitamin D in the body. An improper diet is the major cause of this type of deficiency or even insufficient exposure to sunlight or malabsorption of the dietary vitamin D resulting in the other diseases that interfere with the normal nutrient uptake. An example of such disease is celiac disease and intestinal bypass surgery.
Inherited kidney disease causes excessive excretion of calcium with the urine. Kidney dysfunction of kidney tumours might also result in the rickets.
Risk Factors
- This disorder is much common in children especially the infants who have either an improper diet or do not get adequate sunlight.
- Pregnant or breast feeding woman who usually have a deficiency of vitamin D or do not leave the house much so as to get exposure to sunlight.
- Patients suffering from coeliac diseases or those who have undergone intestinal by pass surgery.
- People with kidney disorders.
Symptoms & Signs
- More frequent bone fractures.
- Fever and restlessness, especially at night.
- Dental deformities.
- Skeletal deformities.
- Continual pain in the bones.
- Tenderness in arms, legs, spine or the pelvis.
- Weakness.
- Muscle cramps.
- Impaired growth or slow growth.
Diagnosis
Rickets is usually diagnosed by a musculoskeletal examination. This examination reveals pain or tenderness in the bone itself rather joints or the muscles. Tetany (prolonged muscle spasm) may occur in case of reduced serum levels of calcium. Chevostek’s sign (a spasm of facial muscles with tapping over the facial nerve), if found positive could also indicate towards low serum levels of calcium.
Bone X-rays are often used to show decalcification or any kind of changes in the shape and structure of the bones. A bone biopsy is sometimes opted to confirm the rickets.
Prevention
Rickets could be prevented by keeping a check on the intake of calcium, phosphorous and vitamin D. for this you should either modify your diet or supplement your diet with dietary supplements.
Treatment
Doctors usually treat rickets by suggesting an increase in the vitamin D and calcium intake. This could be done through a proper and healthy diet along with dietary supplements. A healthy and balanced diet here includes a lot of daisy products such as mil cheese butter etc (make sure that your margarine has vitamin D)
Cod-liver oil tablets are often prescribes to supplement the intake of vitamin D.
An exposure to sunlight every day is not only beneficial but also necessary.
