AIDS (HIV) Support
Introduction
Aids stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. This is an opportunistic infection. It has no specific symptoms because it has no definite signs of its own. It is characterized by many different symptoms. As from the name it’s eminent that this is not an automatic deficiency but it is acquired through certain dealings. It is not a disease itself neither it has any thing in itself but the problem it creates is suppression of immune system, which is responsible for all the happenings, after aids has affected a person. Aids is caused by a virus called HIV which can be further distinguished as HIV-1and HIV-2. HIV-1 is known as HIV worldwide. HIV-2 is mostly found in Africa and is considered to be less harmful than HIV-1. It is a lethal disease and results in many other perilous ailments such as cancers. People with HIV may not show up the disease for even up to 10 years. When the immune system fails against the HIV virus the person is at risk of developing any disease far more easily than in normal conditions. Aids is a worldwide epidemic affecting more than 600,000 Americans since 80’s.
Alternative Names
The term Aids and HIV positive are used interchangeably
Causes
Aids is basically caused by the spread of HIV virus from an affected person to an unaffected person. There is no other possible way of getting HIV virus. The HIV virus affects the functioning of the white blood cells specifically the T cells, which are responsible for protection against the normal invading virus in body. When they do not perform their duty perfectly the person becomes more susceptible to many other viruses and bacteria which are not as harmful in normal condition. It can spread through only fusion of blood from an aids affected person to another. Aids can spread by sexual contact, pregnancy and blood transfusion. It can spread from sexual contact; from a man to woman and women to a man and even from men to men. Only possible way of being affected by HIV virus is blood transfer; it can be through the use of needle and sexual intercourse or from an affected mother to the child which is unborn. The child, who is born to an infected lady with HIV positive, is at 30% risk of inheriting the disease from his mother. Breast feeding can also be responsible for spreading of the HIV virus. A direct cut in the skin can also provide the gateway to the virus to enter the blood stream. However the disease can not be transferred by animals and does not live outside the human body.
