Angina

Introduction
Many times we hear that some one had an angina attack. The term angina is related to heart disease. During an angina attack the patient suffers from chest pain due to insufficient flow of blood, (ischemia) or the inability of heart to pump the blood properly (myocardium). Angina happens due to the insufficient blood supply which can be due to many problems like heart muscles are weakened or vessels are hindered by some obstruction in between. The word angina is used to describe chest pain. However it is not a heart attack but the symptoms can be confused with that of heart attack. There are three kinds of angina; stable, unstable and variant. Each kind is specified by its own symptoms and duration of pain. The duration of stable angina is for few minutes and then it gradually disappears. The duration of unstable angina is also for a short period of time but every time its intensity of pain is increased. During the spasm when the blood supply is slowed down or completely stopped it is called variant angina. Variant angina can even result in heart attack. Almost 3 to 5 % people are affected by angina in U.S. each year.

Alternative Names
The alternative name for angina is angina pectoris.

Causes
When heart muscles do not get proper amount of oxygen, it can result in angina. The blood vessels which are responsible for the supply of blood to the heart are not doing their work in the approved manner. Coronary artery disease can be a cause of the angina attack. Another artery disease called artherosclerosis can also result in angina attack. During artherosclerosis the plaques formed in the artery cause hindrance in proper supply of blood which results in lack of oxygen to heart muscles. As the heart does not get the required amount of oxygen, its working is disturbed and the muscles face stress and strive hard to work in the normal ways. The struggle of heart muscles causes pain in the chest, which is the characteristic of angina. Emotional stress and physical stress can lead to over working of heart muscles and can cause heaviness of chest. Smoking and alcohol is also suspected contributing factors in causing angina. Sedentary life style is also a cause of angina as it can increase the weight of the patient.
