Appendicitis

Introduction
Appendicitis refers to inflammation of appendix. Appendix is a part of the large intestine. It is situated near the lower right of the abdomen. It is a small finger like projection of the intestine. As far as research is concerned, appendix has no specific function in the body but it can be affected by infections. Appendicitis is to be treated urgently, if not it can result in death. The infected appendix is at risk of being ruptured so it needs to be removed promptly. It can be found in children of very young age and also in youngsters. It is a very common abdominal emergency. Removing of appendix does not cause any harm or change in life style of the sufferer. Appendicitis is a sudden condition which is very intense. If appendix is ruptured, it can result in Peritonitis.

Alternative Names
There is no alternative name for appendicitis.

Causes
The exact causes of appendicitis remain unknown till now but some kind of bacteria from the intestinal tract is supposed to affect the appendicitis and cause inflammation in appendix. The presence of bacteria can result in swelling and the appendix could be filled with pus. Sometimes it can be as a result of some tumor. Even obstruction by feces can cause appendicitis. Any bacteria or other invader can be responsible for the irritation and pain in appendix. The part of some bowel can also get into the appendix. As the appendix fills with the invading material the opening of the appendix closes which can eventually result in bursting of the appendix. This can cause infection in other organs and can be fatal.

Risk Factors
  • Usually men are more at risk than women.
  • cMales in their late teens or early 20’s are susceptible to appendicitis.
  • Children under the age of 2 years are not as prone as the other age groups are.

Symptoms & Signs
There are many symptoms; they can be confused with other disease’s symptoms.
  • Sharp abdominal pain.
  • The pain becomes worse when walking or coughing.
  • The pain increases to the right side and causes tenderness.
  • Feeling of nausea and vomiting can be observed too.
  • Chills.
  • Menstruation can also become painful.
  • Fever.
  • Urine may become bloody after rupture of the appendix.
  • Rectal tenderness can also be noticed.
  • The pain usually begins from the center of the abdomin (belly button).
  • Diarrhea or constipation can be noticed in the patient.
  • Loss of appetite can also be followed.
  • If the appendix is ruptured the count of white blood cells increases and the heart rate is also increased.

Diagnosis
Prompt and exact diagnosis is very important in appendicitis because any kind of negligence or delay can worsen the condition of the patient and even cause death. CT scan of the abdomen and ultrasound can help to diagnose the disease perfectly and clearly. Urinalysis can be done in order to check if there is any infection in urinary tract. However in most of the cases the diagnosis is not a perfect one and usually the situation is observed when surgery is carried out.

Prevention
People suspected for appendicitis should not take enemas which can cause the appendix to burst. There are no such measures which can be taken so as to escape appendicitis but there is an assumption that green vegetables can help in some aspects.

Treatment
The only treatment of appendicitis is appendectomy, the operation in which appendicitis is removed. As the appendicitis is removed there are no chances of its reoccurrence. Treatment is very necessary otherwise the pain can result in bursting of appendicitis causing many complications, like infections.
