Blepharitis

Introduction
It is a condition caused by inflammation of the eyelid. It is a common condition found in every part of the world and it usually recurs. Blepharitis can be categorized as staphylococcal blepharitis and seborrheic blepharitis. Blepharitis can be anterior or posterior. It is not a contagious condition and does not pass from one person to another. Blepharitis is a permanent condition and can not be finished completely but the severity of the inflammation may be decreased. Blepharitis caused by staphylococcal is anterior blepharitis and posterior blepharitis is caused because of the seborrheic condition. Seborrheic condition is a skin condition which is characterized by excess oil accumulation.

Causes
The cause of blepharitis is bacteria which can be present around the skin area of the eye. The over growth of the bacteria in skin around the eyes is responsible for causing inflammation. The staphylococcal bacterium causes inflammation and results in anterior blepharitis. Anterior blepharitis can also be caused by scalp dandruff. The posterior blepharitis affects the inner sides of the eye lids and it is caused by a skin condition called seborrheic. Seborrheic dermatitis and acne rosacea can cause posterior blepharitis. Seborrhea may be a part or all over the skin. The oil glands may start over working. The excess production of the oil glands may provide the bacteria to over grow and causes blepharitis. The dandruff is also one of the causes of blepharitis. Many other allergies can also result in blepharitis. This inflammation of the eyes occurs in childhood usually and is carried on. It is an irreversible process but its severity can be decreased. The bacteria attacks the skin at childhood and live there but as the time passes these bacteria grow more in number resulting in inflammation of the eye lids.

Symptoms & Signs
There are many prominent symptoms of blepharitis:
  • Redness and soreness around the eyes
  • Lashes may start falling or complete loss of eye lashes can be seen.
  • Scaly area around the eyes.
  • Photophobia can be observed in the patient.
  • Itching.
  • Burning sensation in eyelids can be noticed.
  • The eyelids may become reddish and swollen.
  • Tearing can also be seen.
  • Vision can be affected too and become blurred.
  • Dry eyes.
  • Crusting of eyes can also take place.
  • Corneal infection can result if blepharitis is not taken care properly.


Diagnosis
Medical and complete check up of the eyes is enough for diagnosing the blepharitis. The symptoms are prominent enough to make the diagnosis. Accurate and in time diagnosis is very important otherwise the condition can be worsened.

Prevention
  • Try to keep the eye lids free of crust.
  • Keep your eyes clean.
  • Use disinfectant if any particles invade into the eyes.


Treatment
There are no such ways of treatment which can relief the patient completely from blepharitis but however these treatments are found to have a positive impact on the patient’s condition. The treatment includes medication and rest. Use of eye drops should be done as prescribed by the doctor. If dandruff is the cause of blepharitis than, it should be treated first to prevent any kind of further complication. Treating the cause can assist to decrease the intensity of irritation and tingling in the affected area.
