Brittle Bone Disease

Introduction
Brittle bone disease is different from osteoporosis. It refers to the abnormalities which are genetically inherited. The abnormalities in the collagen in the bones become the reason for the brittle bone disease. It is not like osteoporosis which is due to lack of calcium. Due to resemblance of its symptoms it may not be diagnosed or may be diagnosed as some other case. More than 3.5 thousand people are diagnosed with brittle bone disease. The worst of the effects is death. The symptoms of the disease can be seen in childhood only if it is present. The brittle bone disease can be divided into different types according to their effects. One of the types is fatal brittle bone disease in which the affected person dies. Usually infants with severe brittle bone disease may die soon after birth.

Alternative Names
Ostoegenesis Imperfecta (OI) is another name used for brittle bone disease.

Causes
The most usual cause of brittle bone disease is the genetic factor. If the mother or father have the disease the children are more likely to suffer from it. The insufficient collagen is responsible for the brittle bone disease. Either the collagen produced is insufficient or it is defected which makes the bones brittle causing them to break easily. Collagen is a substance formed within the bones. If its production is under efficiency, it can cause crippling of the person suffering from it. Its effects can be different in different patients. It can be found in small children and even in people of older age. An OI patient may suffer from 100 fractures in his life time. Children born with brittle bone disease can experience fracture during mild exercises; like trying to stand up and walking etc, during the first three years of life.

Risk Factors
People inheriting this disease.

Symptoms & Signs
  • It can result in severe deformity.
  • Frequent fractures are a part of its symptoms
  • Limbs are the most effected parts.
  • Deformity of the skeleton can occur too.
  • In children fractures occur at very early age.
  • Deafness can be a symptom too.
  • An OI patient may suffer from several fractures in his life time.
  • Bone pain can be a prominent sign of the brittle bone disease.
  • Mobility of a person is badly affected because of the insufficient collagen.
  • Independent movement may become impossible.
  • Short height and short stature can be apart of the signs of brittle bone disease.
  • The bone pain is chronic and intense.
  • Low nasal bridge is observed in the affected patients.
  • The white area of the eyes may appear bluish.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis can be made on the basis of the symptoms and signs. Medical history is also very important in making a perfect diagnosis. The diagnosis of the brittle bone disease can be made clearly by the help of some medical tests such as x-rays and other specific tests which can help in determining the bone mass density.

Prevention
As the brittle bone disease is a genetically inherited disease no prevention can save the child from getting this disease except for very high level genetic engineering. There are no preventions which can save the person from getting the brittle bone disease. Specific diet is believed to have some good effect in this regard. Research is being done in order to discover the preventions against it.

Treatment
The treatment of the brittle bone disease is present but there has been no complete success as yet. There are certain drugs and medicines which can decrease the progress of the disease. The drugs can help the patient in some ways like increasing the bone mass and preventing the fractures occurring frequently. The prompt treatment of the fractures is necessary to avoid future problems.
